Building true wealth

Building true wealth

How far do you think your money in the bank today will stretch?
A bit of a longer one today, so stick with me…

“Money in the bank is like food in the fridge but true wealth is like owning a farm”. 🌱💰

I shared this analogy on Friday at the UKBBS Black Finance Talks and it really struck a chord in the room.

When you have money in the bank, it gives you comfort, immediate access and spending power. It's like opening the fridge and either having a ready made meal or one you can pull together pretty quickly. Over time however, what happens to food that's kept in the fridge too long? Perishable and inevitably less valuable to you.

Your farm however… may not always offer instant gratification but it has the power to produce continuously. It takes time and patience to build but eventually, it yields crops season after season and remains sustainable.

So, to which I ask… what does your farm look like?

If you are serious about creating lasting wealth, it's probably time to think beyond savings. I say often “we can't save our way to wealth” so here are a few ‘plots’ you can start cultivating:

  1. Investments: Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs - these are assets that typically grow over time. Regular contributions, even small ones, can compound into significant returns.
  2. Real Estate: Property remains one of the most time-tested forms of wealth, with multiple avenues to explore, it can provide both stability and cash flow.
  3. Business or Side Ventures: Risky… yes, but also one of the most direct ways to build wealth and freedom. It's no easy feat but when done correctly, has the ability to sustain you and others.
  4. Yourself: Your knowledge, relationships, mindset. Money is one thing but a lot of our financial decisions are driven by the other facets of who we are. Don't forget to nurture you.

Money in the bank is necessary, it's your emergency fund & your day to day cash flow but not to be mistaken for wealth. To generate wealth, you need to own the factory not just the end product.

So, as you begin thinking about next year's goals, ask yourself, “Am I stocking my fridge or building my farm?”. The answer might just give you the direction to reshape your financial future.

Wishing you a fab week & for those who are keeping an eye out… my 1:1 calendar is now open for slots in early November.
